The study has the best title in psychology, and bad news for everyone who says “utilize”.
One skill: Choosing the exact word
Daniel Oppenheimer published a paper called “Consequences of Erudite Vernacular Utilized Irrespective of Necessity: Problems with Using Long Words Needlessly.” The title is the experiment: he took essays, swapped words for their longest synonyms, and asked readers to judge the authors’ intelligence. The fancier the vocabulary, the lower the judged intelligence. Every time, across five studies.
Fluency: the hidden judge
The mechanism is processing fluency. When language parses easily, the ease itself feels good, and readers misattribute that feeling to the author: clear, confident, smart. When parsing drags, the strain gets misattributed the same way: confused, evasive, trying too hard. Your listener never separates the effort of decoding you from their verdict about you. The medium bills the message.
But this is not an argument for a small vocabulary, and here’s where the nuance earns its keep. A large vocabulary’s real function isn’t length, it’s precision: knowing “brittle” when others only have “bad”, “stall” when they have “stop”, “concede” when they have “admit”. Paivio’s dual-coding work adds the second edge: concrete, picturable words are stored twice in memory, verbally and as imagery, so the precise-and-concrete choice is both easier to process and harder to forget.
Sharpen, don’t inflate
- The swap test. If a shorter word means the same thing, the longer one is costing you credibility for nothing: utilize→use, leverage→use, facilitate→help, commence→start.
- Spend vocabulary on distinctions. The impressive move isn’t “ascertain”: it’s the word nobody else in the meeting had: “the plan isn’t wrong, it’s brittle.” One precise word does what a paragraph of hedging can’t.
- Prefer picturable. “The rollout stumbled” beats “we experienced implementation friction” twice over: faster to parse, stored in two memory codes.
- Mistake to avoid: dumbing down concepts along with words. Fluency research punishes needless complexity of language, not depth of thought. Keep the sophisticated idea; carry it in plain packaging.

Oppenheimer’s participants admitted it themselves: most people inflate vocabulary to seem intelligent, meaning your plain-spoken competitor isn’t less learned, they’ve just read the room correctly. Confidence shows in what you dare to say simply.
