How to Explain Complex Ideas Simply
The hard part isn’t simplifying the idea. It’s remembering what not-knowing felt like.
One skill: Crossing the knowledge gap
Tap the rhythm of a song you know on a table and ask someone to name it. It feels unmissable, the melody is right there in your taps. Listeners almost never get it: they receive clicks; you hear an orchestra. Every expert explaining their field is the tapper, and the orchestra-in-your-head problem has a name.
The curse of knowledge
Economists Camerer, Loewenstein and Weber demonstrated that better-informed people systematically fail to ignore what they know when predicting what others understand, they can’t un-know it, so they aim explanations at a listener who half-exists. This is why experts skip steps that feel “obvious”: those steps genuinely are obvious, to the one person in the room who doesn’t need the explanation.
The repair mechanism is older than the bias: structure-mapping. Dedre Gentner showed that analogies work by carrying the relationships from something familiar onto something new, “the atom is like a solar system” transfers orbits, not planets. A good analogy is scaffolding for a blank map: temporary, load-bearing, and meant to be dismantled once the real structure stands.
Build the bridge in three moves
- Start from their shore. Name something the listener already understands and anchor there: “You know how your phone backs up overnight? Same idea, for databases.” One sentence of shared ground beats three of definitions.
- Carry one box. Choose the single relationship that matters and leave the rest behind. The pile (the caveats, the edge cases, your favourite subtlety) is what drowned every failed explanation you’ve heard.
- Give one concrete case before any abstraction. “Contextual prerequisites” research showed the same passage flips from gibberish to obvious when a frame arrives first. Example, then principle, never the reverse order you learned it in.
- Mistake to avoid: disclaiming your analogy to death (“well, it’s not EXACTLY like that…”). State it, use it, and replace it later. Scaffolding apologised-for holds nothing.
